The time when a staircase was just a communication arteria between floors has long gone. In modern interiors, they are more often deliberately exposed, acting as the ‘heart’ of the space, fulfilling and completing the design’s idea. More often they are treated as a long-term investment, rather than a couple of boards and nails put together.
And why shouldn’t they be? Stairs should be enjoyed by all, and serve happy feet for many years to come. It is certainly not worth rushing their design, as we have an incredible range of choices to consider.
We have concrete, natural stone, wood, metal or glass. You can have them straight, quarter landing, half landing, winder, arched…
The opportunities for creating and inventive design are endless. It all depends on imagination, the size of the space, and the material selection.
